Another chapter in the book of 'ever since I have a travel blog I suddenly manage to try places in my home town I never went to before', Tom Simmons is conveniently close to City at Tower Bridge to qualify as an easy after work choice while benefitting from a different vibe and not exclusively full of bankers.
The concept is modern British with a strong focus on quality cooking and ingredients which is a welcome change from chain restaurants in this quite touristic part of town.
We decided to go for the pre-theatre menu which was excellent value at £28 and luckily fitted our time preference for an early meal as well. The wine list had a good amount of choice but was a bit skewed towards French wines by the glass, which perfectly pleased me but others might miss the New World - bottled wine choice however was varied and well selected.
Our starters were a celery veloute and foie gras, both very nice albeit not exactly the best choice if you happen to be on a diet. For my main I chose a plaice with shellfish sauce and saffron potatoes, which was very good and not too big after a heavy starter...
while my friend opted for the roasted heritage squash, which convinced her somewhat less.
For dessert we agreed on a warm bitter chocolate mousse with coconut ice cream which was very creamy and evidently used a high quality chocolate as ingredient
