We were searching for a hotel in the vicinity of St Malo for our road trip to Brittany. We decided to stay at Hotel de l'Abbaye, a beautifully restored old cloister a couple of kilometres inland and did not regret this choice.
The setting of the hotel is idyllic, with a large garden with swimming pool and overlooking a small lake on the other side. The renovation has been thorough and guest rooms are tastefully appointed and comfortable.
Some rooms have private and sunny terraces towards the pool - these should be your first choice, however we booked rather short notice and stayed in a room in the main building which was perfectly fine as well.
Breakfast is served in a small room overlooking the garden, with good quality products (nice baguette) and a machine for speciality coffees such as cappuccini. On busy days, get there early or late as it can be a bit noisy when crowded. We were lucky on the weather front and could eat outside which was very nice.
There are not many good restaurants around the hotel, so having dinner there is a must - make sure you book your table in advance. The menu at €39 is good value and the wines are very nice, they promote a vinery in the Loire valley, make sure you try one of these.
