We came here with great expectations, this hotel has recently been taken over and is to be transformed into a top resort. Pictures of the rooms, suites and restaurants indicated an exceptional interior design and we were looking forward to discover this place a bit further away from the beaten track in Reit im Winkl, which is close enough to Kitzbuhel but not usually associated with posh spa hotels.
Initial impressions were excellent, it is set on a sunny plateau above the main village and surrounded by newly build chalets, with grazing deer and goats adding to the peaceful atmosphere.
Seeing our room was a bit of a sudden wake up call, instead of a renovated room, the Geigenstein standard rooms still have 20y bed steads with the associated aged mattresses as well as a bathroom from the late nineties with flourescent lighting. While it was good value for money, this felt like a betrayal given that the advertised pictures are all new, nice and shiny. This continued with the pool and spa, the coffee terrace and the breakfast room, which can do with a make over.
If you want to stay in the Reit im Winkl area, I would recommend Gut Steinbach, but ideally stay in one of the new chalets and get breakfast served there or get a higher category of room or suite.
